Biography:

António Jorge Pacheco, Artistic Director Casa da Música (Porto)

This concert/project is somehow provocative. John Cage invented a piece without music with the precise duration of 4’33’’ and Casa da Música together with IRCAM has invited some composers to invent music to fill up the precise 4’ 33’’. I believe Cage would have liked to know that somebody had the idea of destroying his concept. On the other hand, we commissioned these pieces from composers with totally different, if not opposite aesthetic backgrounds. So there was not a question of asking John Cage’s “followers” to write music in Cagean style.
