Orchestre National de Belgique
violin Akiko Suwanai
conductor Pascal Rophé
Luc Breweays: symphony n° 8**
Henri Dutilleux: L’arbre des songes, concerto for violin and orchestra (1983-85)
Igor Stravinsky: Le sacre du printemps (1911-13)
Pascal Rophé ranks the world creation of Luc Brewaeys’s Eighth Symphony alongside monumental orchestral works of the 20th century composers. Henri Dutilleux certainly caused less of a sensation with his violin concerto than Stravinsky did with Le sacre in 1913, but the high quality and sheer beauty of his work should earn him a special place in the repertoire of the future.

Above all else, symphonic music is a living performance. Over and above the work played, it is vital that the audience feels the energy and sensitivity of this extraordinary group of people, this collection of very diverse and remarkable individuals. It is the very togetherness of this group of human beings, united in working towards a common goal (the masterpiece), which must be conveyed to the audience. It’s just human nature.

Concert le plus insolite ? 1994 Ircam/Ensemble Intercontemporain/Benedict Mason. Le soir du concert j’étais assis dans le public et ma main enregistrée sur 12 écrans vidéos dirigeait l’ensemble.
