Riccardo Nova: Primes – for Indian instruments, chamber orchestra and electronics (commissioned by l’Opéra de Lille)
music as a sacred science
The recent production by Riccardo Nova (born in1960), from Milan, has a remarkable sound
combining traditional Indian music, contemporary music, and experimental noise. Nova’s music, so psychedelic and accomplished in the art of electronic anamorphosis and saturation like that of his friend Fausto Romitelli (1963-2004), integrates the esotericism of the classical music of southern
India: great rhythmic virtuosity within the framework of a sacred science of numbers. This is the sense of the title of this new work, which covers an evening performance: Primes, prime numbers.
Riccardo Nova, composer
Musically, the differences between India and Europe are enormous : India has developed a pure monodic musical system which is developing at a very slow pace (at least for a western eye) while European music has pursued, since the very beginning of its musical journey, a “harmonic” vision based on the understanding of frequencies and developing in connection with the new scientific discovery. The common ground is the level of abstraction and the formalization that both cultures have developed during the last centuries.
My favorite books: G.G.Casanova - Mémoires écrits par lui-même, Mort à crédit by Louis-Ferdinand Céline
My favorite football club is Inter Milan
Do you sometimes compose/play music in your pyjamas, naked or in costume? Always strictly naked...
My most embarrassing moment on stage was in the period when, as a music student, I was often playing for funerals (more lucrative than weddings)... It was the fourth funeral of the day, I felt asleep on the organ keyboard with all register open... This was a glorious cluster... For a second, I thought death would resurrect like Lazzaro.
Any bad habit? Name one… I have it...
My most unusual concert until now was an open air concert (amplified)... It was very windy, so the result was that the audience could only hear the wind noise trough the speakers... Quite interesting!
