Music is always a central feature of the films and documentaries of Werner Herzog. In the Winter & Winter Studios in Munich, Herzog fell under the spell of the music of cellist Ernst Reijseger. Before long, the soundtracks for the films The Wild Blue Yonder and The White Diamond were created. The first is a fictional film about a dying planet. The second is a documentary about an aircraft engineer in Guyana. A hypnotic and therapeutic trance-like effect of whirling dervishes, outside of space and time, results from a perfect symbiosis between director, musicians, and images, conveyed by an unexpectedly virtuoso synergy between jazz and world music. The project doesn’t rest only on the strength, versatility, and intelligence of a masterly director and a great composer. You also hear the outstanding solos of Mola Sylla and a heavenly polyphonic choir from Sardinia.
“Requiem for a Dying Planet is not the anticipated death song for the earth, this music is dedicated to this wonderful planet and the beauty of living.”
