Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1977, he moved to the United Kingdom at the age of fifteen, where he studied with Sir George Benjamin
He was the youngest composer to win the Serocki International Composition Competition. Since then, he has received numerous other awards, including the Ivor Novello Prize, the Royal Philharmonic Society Prize, the Vienna International Composition Prize, the Paul Hindemith Prize, the 19th Akutagawa Composition Prize, and the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale
Composer of landmark symphonic works, such as his Fourth Piano Concerto Akiko's Piano, composed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, released by Sony Music in 2020; Entwine, performed by orchestras such as the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne and the New York Philharmonic; Wavering World, commissioned by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and performed worldwide...
He has composed four operas: SOLARIS (2015), co-commissioned by several European opera houses; The Gold-Bug (Basel Theatre, 2018); A Dream of Armageddon (New National Theatre Tokyo, 2020); The Great Wave (Scottish Opera, 2026)
